Route 1 Improvements: Ashcake Road to Arbor Oak Drive
Overview
This VDOT-led project will widen a half-mile portion of the S Washington Highway (Route 1) corridor from Arbor Oak Drive to Ashcake Road in the Town of Ashland. The project includes new left turn lanes as well as raised medians and sidewalks. The new enhancements will allow for improved safety and accessibility.
At a Glance:

- Construction Status - Currently under construction
- Estimated Completion Date - Fall 2026
UPDATE 12/03/25:
- Pleasant St Detour installation is currently scheduled to begin on 01/05/2026.
- New traffic patterns in place as work begins on phase 2 of construction.
- Work on stormwater system continues.
UPDATE 10/29/25:
- Work on stormwater system continues.
- Milling & paving sections of asphalt to begin in November.
- New road striping to be installed following paving.
UPDATE 10/13/25:
- Crews will be performing digging and grading work for various entrances & curbs.
- Sidewalks, curbs, and ADA ramps to be installed from car wash entrance to Green Chimney Court.
- Roadway striping changes currently underway.
